Mostly, we use infinitive verbs in the simple present tense, except for the 3rd person singular.

3rd person singular

We add -s, -es, -ves, and -ies with the stem verb for 3rd person singular.

However, there are some irregular verbs of present tense for 3rd person singular.

Example: Have – Has

Subject + stem verb+ s / es / ies etc..

    • Add ‘es’ for the verbs that end in o, –ch, –sh, –ss, –x and –z.
    • Add ‘ies’ for the verbs that end in y but remember to eliminate Y from the verb.
    • Add ‘ves‘ for the verbs that end in -f and -fe.
    • Add ‘s’ for the verbs that end in vowel+y.

Example

    • He drinks milk every day.
    • Jane brushes her teeth twice a day.
    • It tries hard to climb the tree.
    • She buys a new car.

     Example: Charlotte plays tennis every day.

     Example: Carter doesn’t speak Sinhala.

  • talk about the habitual behavior

     Example: Dev brushes his teeth twice a day.

  • talk about how the people feel and their opinions

      Example: I am happy today.

                   She wants an apple to eat.

  • talk about the thoughts of people

     Example: I think he is busy.

  • talk about scheduled events

     Example: She flies at 8:00 pm tonight.

  • talk about time

      Example: It’s 5 o’clock.
